Discovering History and Identity
Makom Mifgash Alef – Seminar in Taevaskoya
On June 14, 2024, the Makom Mifgash Alef seminar took place in the picturesque Taevaskoya, focusing on the issues of anti-Semitism and the role of historical memory. The event attracted international youth, who participated in interactive discussions, shared their personal experiences, and reflected on the importance of memory in building identity in today's complex world.
During the seminar, led by guest lecturers from different countries, the youth had the opportunity to embark on a journey of self-discovery in the context of Judaism. The event, organized in cooperation with the Makom Mifgash Movement and BBYO, became a platform for creating innovative cross-media projects aimed at countering anti-Semitism at the local and even global level. One of the teams was particularly inspired, declaring that they would continue the project after the seminar ended.
A Walk through the Memorial Park in Tallinn
The next event in the series took place on 19 March 2025 in Tallinn. The Guided Walk through the Memorial Park, i.e. a guided walk through the Memorial Park by the old Jewish cemetery, gathered 42 participants – including members of parliament, historians and educators.
During the walk, participants explored the history of the cemetery, including the dramatic consequences of the Soviet interference that led to its destruction. They also discussed the reconstruction processes that allowed the park to reopen in 2023. The event initiated important discussions on the protection of cultural heritage, and contributed to:
Strengthening cooperation between non-governmental organizations, decision-makers and the local community,
Raising awareness of the impact of the Soviet regime on historical sites,
Developing the competences of decision-makers and heritage professionals,
Encouraging interdisciplinary cooperation in research and commemorative projects in Tallinn.
Both events were connected by a common mission: deepening historical awareness, engaging diverse groups, and promoting cooperation for the protection of cultural heritage. Thanks to this, participants not only had the opportunity to learn about history, but also actively contributed to building a space in which memory of the past is the foundation of contemporary identity.
