On September 19, an inclusive commemoration of the place of death and burial of a Jewish girl in Rajbrota (Bochnia district) took place, organized by the Zapomniane Foundation.
The first part of the event took place at the Primary School in Rajbrota, where workshops for school students were held. Together with the youth, we renovated a wooden marker in the form of a tombstone (matzevah), and then, using a portable laser, we engraved the inscription on the tombstone: "Here lies a Jewish woman of blessed memory murdered during the Holocaust". The event was also attended by teachers and a local
After the workshops, we went to the burial site together. We followed the path that the girl was led to the place of death and burial. From the accounts of the residents, we know that she ate a piece of cheese on the way, which she received from the dairy where she was held. Together with the youth, we placed the renovated and jointly prepared wooden matzevah in the place where the teenage girl rests.
The event was preceded by field research, including a ground-penetrating radar survey. We met with witnesses and residents who remember the story told by older residents of Rajbrot. The location of the burial site was possible thanks to the precise indication from the daughter of the man who buried the girl's body.
The event and preceding meetings were attended by local residents, youth from two classes of primary school in Rajbrot, teachers, and a local historian who dealt with the case in 2007.
Thanks to the involvement of the local community in the commemorative activities, the memory of the girl, whose name we were unable to reconstruct, was restored.
