SZUL. Stanisław Wygodzki. Reminiscence about a writer from Będzin
events Programme
This year, an absolutely unique event awaits us at SZUL. The Foundation, together with Izabela Tumas-Matuszewska – the creator of the Facebook profile Stanisław Wygodzki – invite you to two days devoted to the work of the most outstanding writer, poet, creator of children's fairy tales, translator from Będzin – Stanisław Wygodzki.
A few decades ago, his outstanding works were required reading in schools. Today, almost no one remembers this exceptional figure. Stanisław Wygodzki is a brilliant prose writer who wrote the following in one of his stories about his hometown:
"The view was vast. Before us lay the city, the most beautiful city in the world, the first and last city of my life".
("In the basin" 1949)
These words have a considerable power for us, they testify to the author's attitude to his place of birth, his sentiment and fascination. Wygodzki returned to Będzin in his work - the city was both a place of joy and hell, which he describes after the war on hundreds of pages of poems, novels and short stories. Wygodzki's fate is moving and full of tragedy. His post-war work oscillates between politics, the Holocaust and the drama of a tortured and unhappy individual. This is literature that needs to be known, appreciated and embraced.
We invite you to meetings during which we will recall the writer, attempt to delve into the meanders of his consciousness and Będzin nuances from the already iconic “Basy” for us.
