“This Place” – a Neighbourhood Walk and a Workshop Seminar about the New Jewish Cemetery in Lublin
events Programme
On 26 October 2025, the Foundation for Documentation of Jewish Cemeteries, in cooperation with FestivAlt, organised a meeting dedicated to the role of the New Jewish Cemetery in Lublin in the city’s culture of remembrance, with a particular focus on the involvement of local neighbours. The gathering began in the unfenced northern section of the cemetery in the Kalinowszczyzna district, where participants joined a guided walk introducing the history of this part of the site, the locations of graves—including those from the Second World War and the Holocaust—and the research conducted by Monika Tarajko. Another highlight was the presentation of an immersive sound walk created by artist Ludomir Franczak for the internationally recognised Echoes mobile app and introduced by Lena Rubenfeld from FestivAlt, offering a new way to understand the cemetery’s boundaries through sound.
After the walk, everyone met at the Kalinowszczyzna Community Culture Centre for a workshop–seminar focused on the present-day meaning of the cemetery, local commemorative practices, and ideas for its future care. The meeting brought together residents of Lublin—especially those living directly around the cemetery—many of whom use the area daily without being aware of its historical importance. Through open discussion and shared reflection, the workshop created a space for neighbours to voice their perspectives, questions, and hopes regarding the future of this significant heritage site.
