The Colours of Heritage: Paint Layers and Finishes in Jewish Historic Monuments of Warsaw and the Lublin Region was a seminar organised by the Foundation for the Documentation of Jewish Cemeteries, with the participation of the Jewish Community of Warsaw and JCC Warsaw. Held at JCC Warsaw, the event focused on recent conservation research into historic paint layers preserved in Jewish heritage sites in Warsaw and the Lublin region, highlighting their significance for the preservation and interpretation of Jewish cultural heritage.

The programme featured a series of expert presentations on surviving paint layers found on matzevot in the Lublin region, the results of recent research conducted at Jewish cemeteries in Warsaw and Lublin, and methods for investigating historic polychrome decoration in synagogue interiors. Particular attention was also given to the history of alterations to the interior of the Nożyk Synagogue in Warsaw and the ongoing research into its original colour scheme.

The seminar demonstrated how conservation research, art history, and material analysis complement one another, providing new insights into Jewish heritage sites. Participants discussed the importance of these findings for conservation planning, heritage documentation, and the interpretation and public presentation of Jewish monuments.

The event brought together conservators, heritage professionals, representatives of NGOs, activists, and members of Warsaw's Jewish community. It concluded with a networking reception that provided an opportunity to exchange experiences, establish new professional contacts, and discuss current challenges related to the preservation of Jewish heritage.

The seminar contributed to the dissemination of recent conservation research and strengthened cooperation between researchers, conservators, civil society organisations, and the local community. It also demonstrated that research into the historic colour schemes of monuments is an important element of documenting, interpreting, and preserving the material heritage of Jewish communities.
